Chembalo Fortress

Picturesque ruins of the Chembalo fortress is a symbol of Balaclava. Located on the top of Fortress Hill towering above the entrance to the bay of Balaclava, Chembalo fortress overlooks the bay and the open sea.  20 minutes uphill hike from the centre of Balaclava to reach Chembalo requires comfortable shoes.  A magnificent view of the open sea and the bay of Balaclava will compensate your efforts. 

Built by Genoese as a trading post in the middle of XIV century, Chembalo served as a bridge for inland and sea trade. There were two towns within the territory of the Fortress. The upper town named after St. Nicolas had a consular castle, a town hall and a church.  The lower town of St. George’s was walled and fortified. 

Chembalo was conquered by Ottoman Empire after Turkish invasion to the Crimea in 1475. Parts of defensive walls, a donjon tower and a few more towers are attractions of this time.

Restoration works and scientific excavations are carried out in the territory of Chembalo. Spectacular performances and tournaments often take place on the top of the Fortress Hill, next to the ruins of the fortress.
